Insomniac Games just dropped the brutal gameplay reveal for Marvel’s Wolverine. Here is why Logan’s bloody, R-rated PS5 journey is exactly what fans need.
For years, superhero video games have played it relatively safe. We’ve swung through the gorgeous, sunlit skyscrapers of New York City as Spider-Man, capturing bad guys in neat little webs and leaving them hanging for the police. It’s heroic, it’s clean, and it’s inherently wholesome.
But James "Logan" Howlett is not wholesome. He doesn’t do clean. And if the explosive new gameplay showcase from the recent PlayStation State of Play proved anything, it’s that Insomniac Games is completely done playing nice.
Scheduled to release exclusively on the PlayStation 5, Marvel's Wolverine looks like a glorious, unapologetic blood bath. It is exactly the direction the studio needed to take, and honestly, it’s the exact game mature comic book fans have been starving for.
Breaking the "Safe" Superhero Mold
When it was first announced that the team behind Marvel's Spider-Man was tackling Logan, a collective breath was held across the gaming community. Insomniac’s mechanical prowess was undeniable—their movement systems and combat flow are industry-standard. However, Spider-Man is built on restraint. Logan is built on rage. You cannot make a truly authentic Wolverine game without acknowledging that the man fights with six-inch adamantium steak knives growing out of his knuckles.
The latest footage shattered any fears of a watered-down, PG-13 experience. Within the first thirty seconds of the gameplay deep dive, Logan slices through cybernetic mercenaries with a feral intensity that makes it clear: this is Insomniac's first true M-rated, blood-spattered endeavor. We see enemies impaled, limbs targeted, and bodies flung through bar windows and environmental hazards. The screen practically drips with crimson.
By leaning heavily into the visceral weight of Logan’s combat, Insomniac is respecting the character's roots. This isn't a hero trying to save everyone; it's a survivor utilizing a lifetime of trauma and weaponized instincts to hunt the people who hunt his kind.
A Darker World for the Mutant Race
The narrative framework established in the reveal sets up a grim, high-stakes atmosphere. In this continuity, mutants aren't celebrated icons or even a publicly recognized crisis yet—they are hiding in the shadows, living in fear of annihilation. Logan, having abandoned his old black-ops crew "Team X" three years prior, is pulled right back into the mud when a high-tech militia known as the Reavers begins kidnapping mutants.
Their employer? Bolivar Trask—a billionaire driven by a fanatical, terrifying belief in human purity and superiority.
This gives the game a grounded, desperate emotional weight. It isn't just about stopping a bank robbery; it's a global trek through the snow-capped wilderness of Canada, the neon-drenched alleys of Tokyo, and the lawless underbelly of Madripoor to save a fraction of a dying population. To make things better, the writing team features talent from Spec Ops: The Line, a game famous for its harrowing, morally grey storytelling. We can expect a narrative that forces us to look closely at the cost of Logan's violence.
Mechanical Mayhem: Claws, Rage, and Jean Grey
Mechanically, the game looks like a masterclass in aggressive pacing. Instead of counter-attacking and webbing enemies from a distance, the core loop demands that you get uncomfortably close. Players will utilize heavy-hitting "Techniques" like the Tornado Spin and Bull Rush to shatter enemy lines, building up momentum to trigger a multi-tiered Rage system.
The highlight of the combat showcase, however, is the implementation of Logan’s legendary Healing Factor. If you take too much damage, you can aggressively push through the pain, activate your Rage, and watch your wounds knit together in real time as you eviscerate the opposition. There’s even a stunning combat visual mode inspired by Marvel's Black, White & Blood comic series, turning the battlefield into a stylized, hyper-violent canvas.
But Logan isn't entirely alone in this meat grinder. The reveal gave us our first look at his partnership with fellow mutant powerhouse Jean Grey. Far from a passive companion, Jean uses her telekinesis to lift, crush, and hurl enemies across the arena, setting up seamless, devastating "Critical Strikes" where she and Logan combine their powers to tear through heavy armor. Seeing the raw synergy between his physical brutality and her mental devastation adds a brilliant layer of variety to the combat loop.
Slicing Toward September
With iconic villains like Sabretooth, Mystique, and Omega Red teased to make appearances, alongside the ominous presence of giant Sentinels, Marvel's Wolverine is positioning itself to be a landmark title. It represents a bold shift for Insomniac, stepping away from the bright, optimistic heroism of Peter Parker and diving headfirst into the dark, complicated psyche of Marvel's most famous mutant.
The world doesn't always need a shining knight in spandex. Sometimes, it needs a broken man with a cigar, a leather jacket, and claws that cut through the dark. Come September, we finally get to let the animal out of the cage.
