Final Fantasy 7 Revelation launches Spring 2027 on all platforms. The Highwind is flyable, Vincent is playable, and Sephiroth is becoming a god. Here is everything from the trailer.

Thirty years ago a game called Final Fantasy VII changed what people believed a video game story could carry emotionally. The weight of that legacy has hung over every decision Square Enix has made about the remake trilogy since 2020. Today at Summer Game Fest, director Naoki Hamaguchi walked onstage and confirmed that the journey ends in Spring 2027. The game is called Final Fantasy VII Revelation, and the theme is resolve.

Not revelation in the religious sense. Resolve as in the word for what you need when you are standing at the edge of the final battle knowing what it is going to ask of you. That framing from Hamaguchi himself tells you more about the emotional register of the finale than any trailer content could.

What the World Looks Like Now

The planet is collapsing. Meteor has been summoned by Sephiroth and hangs in the sky as a constant reminder that the countdown is running. The Weapons, massive planetary guardians born from the planet's own life force, are active and moving across the surface causing destruction on a scale that cannot be addressed by a single party standing in one location. The situation requires something the previous two games could not offer: the ability to be everywhere at once.

The Highwind airship is the answer. The entire planet is freely explorable from the air, controlled directly rather than used as a fast travel menu. Players can skydive from the Highwind at any point, parachuting into any location on the surface and transitioning seamlessly from air to land without a loading screen interrupting the momentum. The world map that the original 1997 game let players navigate as tiny figures walking between enormous landmarks is back, rebuilt at a scale that the original could only suggest.

Wutai is confirmed as a fully explorable location. The city that existed as a small, somewhat isolated area in Rebirth opens up in Revelation as a genuine destination with its own conflicts feeding into the larger war against Sephiroth. The outskirts of Midgar return in a form that the first two games only partially showed. Square Enix described this as their most expansive open world yet, which after Rebirth's already enormous map is a meaningful statement about scope.

The Full Party and What That Means

Every previous entry in the trilogy made some characters more central than others. Revelation commits to a fully assembled party fighting together, which for longtime fans means characters who have been waiting in the margins of the story finally get their moment in the finale. The trailer confirmed playable Vincent Valentine, handled onstage by Matt Mercer who voices him, moving with transformation abilities that the gameplay footage suggests operate as a distinct combat style rather than a simple reskin. Cid Highsmith appears with staff-based strikes. Yuffie continues from her expanded role in Rebirth. Cait Sith, Tifa in a new costume, Barrett, and Cloud are all present in the footage.

The party will divide and conquer across the open world, which implies a system where different characters handle different regions or objectives simultaneously. The strategic implications of that structure for how the story resolves depend on mechanical implementation that the trailer did not fully explain, but the concept fits a finale where the threat is global rather than localised.

New Synergy abilities return and expand on the system Rebirth introduced. The real-time combat from Rebirth carries forward with upgrades rather than being replaced. The seamless character switching mid-attack that the announcement listed as a new feature suggests the fluidity between party members in combat is faster and less menu-dependent than before.

The Thirty Year Weight

Square Enix used the phrase culmination of thirty years of Final Fantasy VII storytelling in the official announcement. That framing is not marketing language. The original Final Fantasy VII came out in 1997. The remake project that Tetsuya Nomura, Naoki Hamaguchi, and Yoshinori Kitase have been building began in 2020. The people making Revelation have been living with these characters and this world for the majority of their professional careers.

Hamaguchi's comment that the team wants to bring all the stories and emotions accumulated over the years to the most satisfying culmination possible is the kind of statement that either proves true in the playing or does not. For the audience that has followed this story across the original game, its compilation entries, the Remake, Rebirth, and every piece of supplementary material released across three decades, the Spring 2027 release is the moment everything was building toward.

No PlayStation exclusivity this time. Revelation launches simultaneously on PS5, Xbox Series X and S, Nintendo Switch 2, Steam, Epic Games Store, and Xbox PC. The previous two entries both launched as PlayStation exclusives before coming to other platforms. The simultaneous multiplatform release signals either a commercial strategy shift or a contractual arrangement that expired, but the result for players is the same: everyone plays it at the same time in Spring 2027.
